Republicans keep Kansas House seat in special election

The importance of the election was demonstrated by the national GOP figures who campaigned for Estes.

Republicans maintain a tight hold on the district, which voted for Trump by 27 points in last year's presidential election and voted for Mitt Romney by eight points back in 2012. Ted Cruz stumped in Wichita, and Vice President Mike Pence and Trump recorded robocalls sent to district Republicans urging them to vote on Tuesday. "You play every game".

Kansas GOP Treasury Secretary Bob Estes defeated Democratic newcomer James Thompson by more than 8,000 votes and almost 7 percentage points.

Thompson won the Kansas Democratic Party's nomination in February by defeating a well-known politician, former State Treasurer Dennis McKinney.

A defeat for Estes, however, would have meant that the people who lived in the district - and perhaps in other parts of the Midwest, too - were unhappy with the president and with Republicans in the state.

Estes said he will go to Washington to work for a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution and to repeal the 2010 health care law championed by former President Barack Obama.

On Tuesday night, Democrat James Thompson did not win the first congressional election in the country since President Donald Trump was elected.

Ron Estes, the Republican candidate for an empty House seat in Kansas, survived a surprisingly competitive race in a heavily conservative district on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.

In a campaign email, Archie Parnell, one of three Democrats running for the 5th District seat, highlighted the results of the race in Kansas's 4th District, where the GOP candidate defeated his Democratic opponent by seven percentage points. "This election, this special election tomorrow, makes a difference".

The PAC, which channels online contributions to Democratic candidates and has raised over $1.5 billion since its inception more than a decade ago, has had some of its greatest success since Trump's election. A Democrat hasn't represented the district since Dan Glickman was ousted in the 1994 Republican wave election.

Guests were invited to participate in various activities, games and musical events as well as the central Easter Egg Roll . Talk about the event also brought attention to the first lady, whose office usually plans the White House Easter Egg Roll.

Less than three months after taking control of Washington, the Republican Party has already been put on the political defensive - thanks primarily to House races in Kansas, Georgia and Montana that have proved unexpectedly hard.

Thompson already is looking ahead to next year's election, when the 4th District seat will be up for grabs.

Campaign manager Colin Curtis said at the time that state Democrats had the opportunity to win the district for the first time in 23 years but that it felt like a lot of the current establishment of the party was "sitting on the sidelines".

Even so, any extrapolation from special elections - whether in Kansas, Georgia, or anywhere else - must be tempered.

Kansas has traditionally been a Republican-leaning state, and the state's 4th congressional district has historically voted red.

Republicans have had a hard stretch, with the health care debacle, federal and congressional probes into Trump campaign contacts with Russian officials and contentious town halls in congressional districts. The Democratic victories in IL prove that the shockingly close race in Kansas is no fluke, and that no Republican is safe. He says he wants to see if the GOP "can get something done" with Republican majorities in the U.S. House and Senate.

"This should be a wakeup call to the administration and the Republican Congress", the lawmaker said. "A wonderful guy, I need his help on Healthcare & Tax Cuts (Reform)", Trump tweeted Tuesday morning.

"Republican Ron Estes needs your vote and needs it badly", Trump said in his minute-long call.

Trump tells callers in the recording that Estes "needs your vote and needs it badly".

Republican state Treasurer Ron Estes, 60, will represent the Kansas 4th congressional district replacing Mike Pompeo, who Trump named as Central Intelligence Agency director.
