Republicans survive election scare, win Kansas House seat
"The better [Democrats] do, the more support they are likely to get", Loomis said. "You play every game".
If voter turnout is pretty good and Estes wins by less than 10 percent, that close margin will be significant, University of Kansas political science professor Burdett Loomis said Tuesday afternoon.
Estes is the state treasurer. Both are seeking intensely to keep the House seats for the GOP.
Special congressional elections are notoriously quirky and often hazardous to ruling parties. Brownback, one of the least popular governors in the United States, may have been more effective for Democrats in this race than anything Trump has said or done so far in his administration.
Republicans pulled out a victory in Kansas in the first of four U.S. House special elections to replace GOP congressmen named to top jobs in President Donald Trump's administration, but the next contest for a seat in Georgia could be tougher to hold.
On Tuesday, Trump tweeted: "Ron Estes is running TODAY for Congress in the Great State of Kansas".
Tuesday's vote was in a heavily Republican district where Trump won 60 percent of votes in November's election.
Local and national media watched as returns came in during last night's election.

In response to the outcry, Mr Farage offered to change his description to gangsters instead, citing "national sensitivities". Juncker also said that the United Kingdom can not enjoy the same benefits as a member state once it leaves the EU.
That GOP concern has spread nationwide as other states prepare for their own special elections, he said.
While Thompson's fundraising prowess has been impressive, the amount of money collected in the Georgia race by Democrat Jon Ossoff, a 30-year-old former congressional staffer and filmmaker, has been particularly notable. In Kansas, Republican Gov. Sam Brownback is hugely unpopular.
Democratic National Committee member and Daily Kos member Chris Reeves said Tuesday that the blog set up its donation site last week. But Thompson won in Sedgwick County, which includes Wichita.
President Trump's approval ratings are low.
The special election was considered a bellwether of how Republicans might fare in next year's midterm elections, with anti-Trump sentiments among many voters. The only reason Estes could is because his district was so red to begin with-in other words, he had a big fat cushion, and he used nearly all of it.
Now, the narrow win for Estes has some Republicans concerned. The result was far smaller gap than the lead Trump and former Rep. Mike Pompeo, who is now Trump's Central Intelligence Agency director, had in the 2016 election.
Meanwhile, the National Republican Congressional Committee poured $130,000 into the race, and other GOP leaders made a strong push for Estes.
Allen thought the race was getting attention also simply because it was the only political drama playing out now, unlike in November, when all state legislative seats were on the ballot. "A wonderful guy, I need his help on Healthcare & Tax Cuts (Reform)".
And Trump, as well as, Vice President Mike Pence recorded a robocall endorsing the candidate for the seat.
