Smith was killed immediately and two boys, Jonathan Martinez, 8, and a 9-year-old fellow student, who has not been identified, near her were struck. As of late Tuesday, the 9-year-old boy was listed in stable condition and said to be improving.

"By all accounts, Jonathan Martinez was a happy child", Marsden said Tuesday at a news conference. "They were just her babies", Fields said.

" [My daughter] said she was a sweet, sweet lady".

"It appears that he had been attempting to contact her and get her to move back home", Burguan said.

Another of Anderson's girlfriends was granted a restraining order in 2013 after Anderson held a pillow over her face, the newspaper reported. But San Bernardino Police Capt. Ron Maass said this wasn't unusual, as people often came to visit their spouses at the school, there was no indication anything was awry, and Anderson's weapon was never seen until after he entered the classroom.

"Unlike disorders that can make connecting with your child hard, children with Williams syndrome tend to be social, friendly and endearing", Superintendent Dale Marsden said, apparently reading from a description on the Williams Syndrome Association website.

It was important for her to come, joining hundreds of other parents, teachers and community members on the lawn at North Park Elementary School just a day after the classroom shooting. "She thought he was reaching out for attention".

As a memorial continued to grow on the sidewalk outside of the elementary school, parents and colleagues remembered Smith as a dedicated educator who cared deeply for her students and was devoted to education.

"She effectively kept her private life private", Burguan said.

She and husband Cedric Anderson, had separated just weeks after their January wedding. Still, there was nothing inherently alarming about the letter's language, he said.

"She loved on kids".

"If found outside of the context of this case, I'm not sure anyone would be terribly alarmed", Burguan said.

Teachers hugged one another and wiped away tears as they returned to the school Tuesday to retrieve their belongings.

School employees knew Anderson, who had followed the proper protocol and got into the school through the front office by telling staffers he had to drop something off for Smith, police said.

The school remained closed Tuesday for the investigation, but members of the community gathered for a vigil there.
