United Nations votes to close, replace Haiti peacekeeping mission

An Associated Press investigation of U.N. Peacekeeping missions during the past 12 years has discovered almost 2,000 allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation by peacekeepers and other personnel around the world.

The UN Security Council has voted to end its military peacekeeping operations in Haiti, but Indian police units will continue in a new mission focused on promoting law and order and developing local forces. But it seems few Haitians will be sad to see them go. It has no jurisdiction over peacekeepers, leaving punishment to the countries that contribute the troops.

And the country is still struggling to recover from the massive Hurricane Matthew in October that wreaked more than $2 billion in damage, killing hopes for an economic revival through agriculture.

Sri Lankan peacekeepers have been revealed to be embroiled in a pedophile circle in Haiti that sexually abuses and exploits minors.

More than 9,000 Haitians have died in the epidemic since then. He reported having sexual encounters with more than 100 of them over three years, averaging approximately four a day.

The peacekeepers had arrived that year as part of a new mission to help stabilize the country in the wake of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide's ouster. She told United Nations investigators that over the next three years, from ages 12 to 15, she had sex with almost 50 peacekeepers, including a "Commandant" who gave her 75 cents.

This appeal by Nikki Haley has come after a widespread outrage against the UN Peacekeepers were allegedly found running a child sex ring in Haiti involving Sri Lankan peacekeepers.

Mark Schuller, an academic studying what happens when global organizations leave countries like Haiti, said for Haitians, the United Nations has garnered a "love-hate" relationship, but the real issue is lack of accountability.

The reputation of MINUSTAH was further damaged in 2010 by an outbreak of cholera introduced by Nepalese UN peacekeepers serving in the mission.

The United Nations also suffered in Haiti, losing almost 100 peacekeepers and personnel in the 2010 quake that killed as many as 300,000 people.
