Apple eying to tap India's huge potential: Tim Cook

Apple has revealed a surprise drop in iPhone sales compared to a year ago, with upcoming handsets potentially to blame.

KitGuru Says: Apple is the richest company in the world at this point, so a tiny in iPhone sales isn't going to have much impact. It might not seem like a big difference, but the sustained fall in sales saw Apple's stock to follow suit to the tune of 1.5 percent.

"We are proud to report a strong March quarter, with revenue growth accelerating from the December quarter and continued robust demand for iPhone 7 Plus", Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, said in the statement. Apple said the segment generated $7.04 billion in revenue this past quarter, the second straight quarter it's crossed the $7 billion threshold, and a $1.05 billion rise year-over-year.

The company sold 50.76 million iPhones, down from 51.19 million a year earlier but a reasonably solid performance as consumers look ahead to the launch of the 10th-anniversary edition of its most important product later this year.

Apple chief executive Tim Cook suggested in a conference call to analysts that the Apple faithful that there is now "a pause in purchases" of the iPhone.

Apple's services business keeps growing too, with the firm reporting an 18 per cent increase in revenues to $7.04bn.

Apple fell short in meeting analyst expectations of 52.2 million units of the iPhone sold in the quarter.

Mr Cook also pointed to growth in sales of Apple Watch, as well as its AirPods and Beats earphones. "We think there basically could be a fight for the body", he said.

It recorded a 4% increase in Mac sales, rising from 4 million for $5 billion to 4.2 million for $5.8 billion.

In total, Apple announced that in the first two quarters of its fiscal year it accumulated net profits of $28.92 billion, slightly higher than the same period last year, when it was $28.87 billion.

Cook also said Apple plans to put money into programs that will train "the next generation" of app developers, and he plans to announce more about that this summer.
