Family of slain DNC staffer demands retractions

The family of slain Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich refuted Fox News reports that he had leaked work e-mails to WikiLeaks before he was fatally shot past year in Washington, D.C.

(From L to R) Then-D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier, Seth Rich's girlfriend Kelsey, Mary Rich, Aaron Rich, and Joel Rich at the scene of the crime in Bloomingdale during a press conference seeking the public's help last August.

By Tuesday night, the account, which had already been hyped on several Fox shows and had been widely circulated and repeated throughout conservative media, began to crumble further, culminating in a CNN report in which Wheeler admitted he hadn't seen any evidence connecting Rich and WikiLeaks. "The family is requesting an immediate retraction, or else we will be looking into other ways we can compel Fox 5 to do the right thing". Now the family of the murder victim is demanding a retraction from the network and a Fox affiliate for its bogus reports, or they may take legal action. Wheeler later told CNN he had no such evidence and that he had, in fact, only heard of some information attributed to him from a Fox News reporter with whom he spoke.

The reports, which gained traction on social media, said an Federal Bureau of Investigation forensics examination showed Rich transferred 44,053 DNC e-mails and 17,761 attachments to a now-deceased WikiLeaks director.

"The police department nor the Federal Bureau of Investigation have been forthcoming", Wheeler explained. The WTTG-TV news director did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

The allegations were reported by Fox News, including WTTG-TV, the District's Fox News affiliate.

Wheeler said he worked for D.C. police from 1989 to 1998 and was at one time a detective in the homicide unit. "We stand by our story", a Fox 5 spokesperson says in an emailed statement around 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

"Explosive developments in the mysterious murder of former DNC staffer Seth Rich that could completely shatter the narrative that in fact Wikileaks was working with the Russians, or there was collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians", Hannity said, introducing the Rich story during his opening segment.

Wheeler claimed to the local station that a source in law enforcement told him that there was credible and confirmed evidence on Rich's laptop computer that Rich had communicated with WikiLeaks before his death. NBC reported Wednesday that the FBI never possessed or examined Rich's laptop, raising doubts about the forensic report and how the unnamed federal investigator would be aware of such details about the contents of Rich's computer. Meanwhile, Fox News on cable also picked up the scoop.

Rich's family and Washington police have said they have no reason to believe there is a connection between Rich's employment at the DNC and his death. Zimmerman's Fox News archives, however, include no other published pieces about the Rich case.

Brad Bauman, a spokesman for the Rich family, released a statement saying the family has "seen no evidence" linking Seth to Wikileaks. Our request for comment didn't mention unnamed sources, making the finger-pointing all the more odd. He also said that MPD is involved in covering up the investigation, which the police department says is untrue.

"It's like picking a a scab and never allowing it to heal", says Bauman.
