In the first parameter of the evaluation process, Chandigarh railway station secured 180.4 marks while in the direct observation where presence and cleanliness of toilets, presence of drinking water booth, waiting room, railway tracks were inspected, the station managed to score 209.3 marks. The stations which contribute more than Rs 50 crore a year in passenger revenue are considered to be A-1 stations.

According to the survey, smaller railway stations such as Jammu Tawi in Jammu and Kashmir, Beas in Punjab, Warangal in Andhra Pradesh and Khammam and Mancherial junctions in Telangana have outperformed major stations in Mumbai.

Railway stations are categorized into A1, A, B, C, D, E and F; which is based on the annual passenger revenue by the ministry. The Union minister has said that they want all the stations to be clean and said that many stations have improved the ranks from the last time.

Other railway stations in the A1 category, which figure in the Swachh survey list, are Thiruvananthapuram Central Station (71st rank with 557), Kozhikode (40th with 687 points) and Thrissur (52th rank with 635 points). During year 2016, Jabalpur-WCR was ranked as "Level 2" In list of cleanliness at zonal headquarters. The second survey was conducted by the Quality Council of India (QCI) at 407 major railway stations -75 A-1 category and 332 A category stations of the Indian Railways. The station has been ranked ninth after the director of environment and housekeeping management of the railway board surveyed 75 A1stations from the country.

Secunderabad (Telangana) and Jammu station got the second and third place in the A-1 category. The station is the best in Bihar as far as cleanliness is concerned with an overall ranking of 70.
