"Our thoughts and prayers should be with the Terence Crutcher and Betty Shelby families during this hard time". Tulsa officer Betty Shelby had been charged with manslaughter in the killing of Terence Crutcher.

The district was not aware of any students choosing to protest the Shelby verdict as of Thursday afternoon, spokeswoman Emma Garrett Nelson said. "Betty Shelby was the aggressor".

Following Shelby's acquittal, protesters gathered outside the Tulsa County Courthouse holding signs and shouting, "No justice, no peace, no racist police". Throughout the trial, no representative of my office ever called the Tulsa Police Department or any of its officers "corrupt".

A jury on Wednesday acquitted Shelby, a white Oklahoma police officer who says she fired out of fear past year, when she killed Terence Crutcher, an unarmed black man with his hands held above his head.

On Sept. 16, Shelby and another officer responded to calls of a stalled SUV in the middle of the street. About 100 demonstrators later gathered outside the courthouse and some briefly blocked a main street.

Tiffany Crutcher said: "Betty Shelby murdered my brother and after she murdered my brother the Tulsa police department covered up for her".

Shelby said during her trail on Monday, "I feared for my life".

Rosenstein said the appointment was "necessary in order for the American people to have full confidence in the outcome". Republicans and Democrats alike praised Mueller, 72, as someone widely respected for his integrity and independence.

Prosecutors said during closing arguments that Crutcher was not a threat to Shelby.

At least four of the 12 jurors were crying as they left the courtroom Wednesday, and they did not look at either Crutcher's family or Shelby. The jury comprised eight women and four men and included three African-Americans.

Her attorneys said Shelby shot Crutcher because she thought he was reaching into his SUV for a gun.

Prosecutors argued that Crutcher had not made any aggressive moves, but Shelby's defence attorneys said he ignored the officer's commands.

Shelby's attorneys argued that in the two minutes before cameras began recording the encounter, Shelby repeatedly ordered Crutcher to stop walking away from her and get on the ground.

A lawyer for Shelby, 43, said she believed Crutcher was under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs.

During the trial, Shelby testified that police training videos taught officers to be on guard when suspects reach in their vehicle because they could be retrieving a gun, according to the Associated Press' report on the incident. "It does not change our work to institute community policing measures that empower citizens to work side by side with police officers in making our community safer".
