Planned Parenthood to close 4 Iowa clinics after funding cut

The Planned Parenthood of the Heartland is closing four affiliates, saying it's a direct result of new legislation signed into law last week to defund the agency.

June 30 is the closing date for Planned Parenthood clinics in Burlington, Keokuk and Sioux City. All other types of appointments will cease at the end of June.

Planned Parenthood claims that part of the new law preventing someone from assisting a minor to obtain an abortion without parental consent will prevent their organization "from advising its minor patients and persons seeking abortion services that they can travel to other states to obtain their abortions".

Three Planned Parenthood clinics in New Mexico-one in Albuquerque, one in Rio Rancho and one in Farmington-will close by this fall.

ACLU of IN legal director Ken Falk, representing Planned Parenthood, says that provision should be halted.

"Defunding Planned Parenthood will set a health care crisis in motion in Iowa", said de Baca, "we will be watching and holding politicians accountable".

Planned Parenthood of IN and Kentucky is suing over a new IN law that makes it tougher for girls under age 18 to get an abortion without their parents knowledge. This year, they also approved a ban on most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and added a 72-hour waiting period to get an abortion. Texas, in 2011, took similar action and created a family planning program.

A report from a Texas agency found that 30,000 fewer women were served in the Texas family planning program following the changes.

Department spokeswoman Amy McCoy said participants will need to bring proof of coverage to receive those services.

No state dollars are used to pay for abortions in Iowa, though anti-abortion groups and Republicans have argued that giving money to Planned Parenthood indirectly helps pay for the medical procedures.
