Koeman not confident Barkley will sign new Everton deal

One week ago Friday, Ronald Koeman reiterated Everton's stance that Ross Barkley is still very much wanted at Goodison Park, provided he signs a new long-term contract soon - very soon... like, before-the-start-of-the-summer soon.

Barkley's current £65,000-a-week deal expires at the end of next season and the midfielder is yet to reach an agreement with Everton despite the offer of fresh terms. If he doesn't commit, his manager wants to sell him and Everton have placed a £50million valuation on the England worldwide.

The first question was if the Dutchman had an update on Barkley and the deadline, and he was blunt.

The Dutch coach was non-committal on that, but when asked if Barkley would be part of his plans in pre-season if the impasse was not resolved he replied: "I don't know". "I don't expect this [situation]".

"I think it's going to be tougher for him at Everton than he thought". We're already two or three months into getting a picture of what we need. "It is after the game, on Monday - then we will know it".

In the women's draw, Venus Williams defeated Johanna Konta 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. There is not even one point that is given. But confidence, you can lose it quickly.

"If you offer the player a good contract, it means we want him to stay here".

The Toffees boss had said that Barkley had until the end of the week to decide whether he would be extending his contract - which is due to run out next summer - or he would be sold.

And when asked if he was confident of keeping hold of Barkley, Koeman added: "No, because it is a long time he has been thinking about his future". But I am not anxious because I like to work with players who like to play.

'Even if it's not about his decision we will go on. It's not about his decision - we will go on, we are looking at players in that position.
