Pennsylvania dad accused of locking 22-month-old son in wooden cage

A 22-month-old boy was found locked in a home-made cage of plywood, and a day-old baby girl and 1-year-old boy were unattended nearby in a Schuylkill county home Wednesday, state police say.

Police went to the home in the 300 block of Chestnut Street, Pottsville, Wednesday with Schuylkill County Children & Youth Services to check on the welfare of the children. Upon arrival at their home in North Manheim Township, Pennsylvania, officers discovered a 22-month-old boy in the cage and a day-old baby girl in a carseat nearby.

The father, Cecil Eugene Kutz, 39, is charged three counts of endangering the welfare of a child and three counts of recklessly endangering another person, FOX8 reports. The children's mother, Tiffany George, had been taken to a local hospital for complications after giving birth to the girl. The children were placed in county custody.

Pennsylvania State Police will hold a press conference at 1 p.m. Thursday.

"You have to feel for these kids", Krute said.

Detroit police spokesman Michael Woody told AP Thursday morning that he couldn't release details about why police are investigating the death as a possible suicide, but noted there were "basic things observed at the scene".

During questioning, Kutz allegedly told investigators he'd kept his kids in the cage before and had left them there on Wednesday in order to visit their mother - his girlfriend - who was in the hospital after recently giving birth.

Krute said the home was dirty, with an unfinished bathroom and exposed wiring.

An earlier story appears below.

Police found his younger brother in a playpen and his newborn sister in a baby auto seat nearby.

He remained jailed today without an attorney.

No one answered their knocks, so they entered the home and found the three children just inside the door. They're now in county custody.
