3-on-3 basketball added to 2020 Tokyo Olympic program

Mixed relays in athletics and swimming and three-a-side basketball were among new events approved on Friday by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for inclusion in the Tokyo Games in 2020. In addition, the USA hosted the CAMTRI Mixed Relay American Championships in Sarasota, Florida, in 2016.

The variation of basketball debuted at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and was included at the 2014 YOG.

International Olympic Committee, IOC, President Thomas Bach from Germany, speaks during a press conference after an executive board meeting, at the Olympic Museum, in Lausanne, Switzerland, Friday, June 9, 2017.

The new sports will add 18 events and 474 athletes, and further the IOC's goal to establish gender balance in both athletes and events.

The U.S. has also embraced the Mixed Team Relay format with the creation of the Major League Triathlon professional racing series in 2016. At discipline level, gender balance is achieved in BMX racing, mountain bike and freestyle wrestling.

These decisions are final because, under the Olympic Charter, no approval is needed from the IOC Session.

The success of the 4x400m mixed event at the recent World Relays in the Bahamas increased the possibility of mixed athletics competitions entering the Tokyo Games.

Parkour in gymnastics has also been rejected. The IOC expects women to account for 48.8 percent of the athletes.

'He will always be Zlatan' - Pogba backs Ibrahimovic to return strongly
Zlatan Ibrahimovic's Manchester United future will become clearer when the Premier League's retained list is revealed on Friday. The Swede will be 36 by the time he next plays, with the serious knee injury expected to keep the striker out until early 2018.

Table tennis missed out with men's and women's doubles and swimming were unsuccessful in proposing new 50m breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke events.

In addition to the mixed 4x100m freestyle and mixed 4x100m medley relays, FINA - swimming's worldwide governing body - has also pitched for the introduction of 50m sprint events for all strokes and genders. That brings the aquatics total to 49, including subcategories swimming, marathon swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and water polo.

Cycling will have no extra athletes, despite the four new events, meaning quotas must be cut from other areas.

As such, new mixed events would generally present existing competitors with a second medal opportunity - in addition to their individual or same-sex team competition - rather than create a new athlete line-up.

For the first time in modern Olympic history, both male and female swimmers will swim the same exact distance events.

This figure does not include 18 new events and 474 new athletes proposed in the five new sports of baseball and softball, karate, sport climbing, skateboarding and surfing approved previous year to appear just at Tokyo 2020.

One of these is weightlifting, which as well as being the only sport to see its total number of events reduced by one, must also make do with 64 fewer athletes - an obvious punishment for the sport's awful doping record.
