Scalise doctor hopes for 'excellent recovery' despite risk

U.S. Representative Steve Scalise remained in critical condition on Friday, a hospital spokeswoman, after he was shot by a gunman earlier in the week who opened fire on Republican lawmakers practicing for a baseball game.

About 13 hours after the shooting on Wednesday, the hospital announced that Scalise had been shot in his left hip by a rifle and that "the bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding", the hospital said in a statement Wednesday.

However, according to Dr. Jack Sava, Rep. Scalise's condition has improved slightly.

Scalise has received two surgeries for his injuries since Wednesday, including a surgery on Thursday in orthopedic trauma to fix a broken bone in his leg. Sava said Scalise remains in the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition.

Thursday night's annual Congressional Ball Game drew record crowds and, despite an 11-2 rout by Democrats over Republicans, the GOP team took home the trophy as lawmakers dedicated the game to Scalise. They made a decision to have the coveted Roll Call Trophy that goes to the victor sent to Scalise's office. And leading figures throughout the American political spectrum, from President Donald Trump on down to local leaders, have taken note of the shooting as a cautionary tale for the nation not to let legitimate differences of opinion escalate to violence and bloodshed. He was transported in shock to MedStar Washington Hospital Center, a Level I Trauma Center. "He will require additional operations to manage abdominal injuries and other bone injuries".

The game at Nationals Park on Thursday evening carried on a century-old bipartisan ritual, this one tinged with worry about Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise and the players' determination to answer the attack by coming together in sport. Sava says Scalise has responded to family members while he's still under sedation.

As for rehabilitation, Sava said he believed Scalise will be "able to walk and hopefully run" in the future. He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding.

Several other people were also injured in Wednesday's shooting before Scalise's security detail and other police officers gunned down the assailant, who later died.

Because of Scalise, Trump said, "and the tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring - and he's having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought - our country will perhaps become closer, more unified".

"So we all owe Steve a big, big thank you", Trump added.

Scalise's chief of staff, Brett Horton, read a statement from Scalise's wife Jennifer.

"An excellent recovery is a good possibility", Sava said.

Investigators said Hodgkinson had obtained his rifle and handgun from licensed firearms dealers, and Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful".

Hodgkinson had a history of posting angry messages against Trump and other Republicans on social media.
