A Georgia sheriff said officers were "desperate".

Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said: 'I saw two brutally murdered corrections officers, that's what I saw. Authorities have also not said if they believe the pair is still together.

Ricky Dubose (left) and Donnie Rowe escaped after allegedly murdering two corrections officers in Georgia Tuesday morning.

They were able to get through a locked gate and overpower two officers, one of whom was driving the transport bus.

The reward for information leading to their arrest grew Wednesday to $90,000, contributed by multiple agencies, Sills said.

A collective reward of $75,000 is being offered for their capture, but that amount is expected to increase as the search continues.

"The selflessness and courage of these two courageous souls will not be forgotten, nor will their sacrifice and service", Deal said in an emailed statement. Sills said the fugitives took some food and likely some clothes, since they left their prison uniforms behind.

PUTNAM COUNTY, Ga (WXIA-TV) - Two prison guards are dead after being shot and killed by prisoners in Putnam County.

Monica, 42, is survived by his wife, while Billue was a 58-year-old who is survived by his two sons.

According to the Sheriff, they have or at least did have two 9mm Glock pistols with high capacity magazines.

Sills agreed with reporters that Dubose will have trouble hiding his prominent tattoos, which include crowns above his eyebrows, a star below his right ear and graffiti-style letters all across his neck.

Dubose and Rowe, he said, might try to break into homes and steal clothing, so police were focusing on identifying those kinds of incidents.

"So, they have known each other quite a while", Georgia Department of Corrections assistant Commissioner Ricky Myrick said. "If anyone sees them or comes into contact, they need to call 911 immediately", the sheriff said. He said they should be considered armed and extremely unsafe.

Authorities said both men are considered extremely unsafe, Sills said during a press conference held at the Morgan County Sheriff's Office in Madison Wednesday afternoon.

It is unclear at this time whether specifically Rowe or Dubose shot and killed the two correctional officers.

Authorities aren't saying which of the escaped inmates did the killing.

A massive manhunt is still underway for Dubose and Rowe, now more than 24 hours after their escape.

The shooting took place in Putnam County around 6:45 a.m. on Highway 16 between Eatonton and Sparta, about 80 miles east of Atlanta on Tuesday.

Curtis Billue, 58, had been a guard since 2007 and Christopher Monica, 42, joined the department in 2009.

Authorities are searching for two inmates, 43-year-old Donnie Russell Rowe and 24-year-old Ricky Dubose.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who was testifying Tuesday morning on Capitol Hill, decried the attacks during his appearance before a Senate subcommittee.

Police are now looking for a truck that was stolen from the county where two escaped inmates were last seen.

Sills says authorities aren't sure where they went after that, but he suspects they're no longer in the Madison area. It was taken sometime between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday. She says a witness saw the men escape in a dark green Honda. Monica had been with the force for more than seven years and Billue had served for almost a decade, according to police.

The sheriff dismissed a tip that they were spotted in a local store.

The names of the prison guards and inmates haven't been released.
