England Under-21s come from behind to see off Slovakia

"I thought in the first half we had lots of possession, we controlled long periods but we didn't really hurt them apart from a few long shots and a couple of crosses".

There were half-chances to add a third goal, particularly when Slovakia moved into a more attacking formation in a bid to salvage a draw during the later stages.

"No matter how good a player you are, just to get settled in was important for us".

England face hosts Poland in their final group game on Thursday, while Slovakia face Sweden.

Speaking to talkSPORT following the match, the former Watford manager said: "I wasn't [worried], because I work with these lads and know the quality they've got".

But Aidy Boothroyd's side were poor for long spells and Martin Chrien's opener looked to have them on the brink of another early European exit.

The Young Lions played into Slovakia's hands with their pedestrian build-up never testing a side who had not competed in the Euros since 2000 - when they hosted the tournament.

Lonzo Ball's draft stock stays strong with Lakers watching
That probably leaves the Lakers deciding between Ball and former Kansas star Josh Jackson , but Jackson is a swingman like George. Ball, 19, averaged 14.6 points, 7.6 assists and 6.0 rebounds over 36 games in his lone season with the Bruins in 2016-17.

Ward-Prowse was also captain for the Under-21s under Southgate - who gave the 22-year-old his senior debut in March - and revealed Southgate has been helping to guide the squad.

"That's going to be an interesting game, but that's what we're here for".

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse has expressed his frustration at the rotation of managers at the club, but he insists the squad are able to "cope".

"I have got nothing but thanks for him".

"It's great if I have any questions about players - Gareth can be my sounding board because he knows them all so well and was a victor with them in Toulon past year". It was great to see him here, to show us there is a pathway for young English players.

He said: "It is one of those things and it is a decision from the club that has been made".
