"I thought in the first half we had lots of possession, we controlled long periods but we didn't really hurt them apart from a few long shots and a couple of crosses".

There were half-chances to add a third goal, particularly when Slovakia moved into a more attacking formation in a bid to salvage a draw during the later stages.

"No matter how good a player you are, just to get settled in was important for us".

England face hosts Poland in their final group game on Thursday, while Slovakia face Sweden.

Speaking to talkSPORT following the match, the former Watford manager said: "I wasn't [worried], because I work with these lads and know the quality they've got".

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse has expressed his frustration at the rotation of managers at the club, but he insists the squad are able to "cope".

"I have got nothing but thanks for him".

"It's great if I have any questions about players - Gareth can be my sounding board because he knows them all so well and was a victor with them in Toulon past year". It was great to see him here, to show us there is a pathway for young English players.

He said: "It is one of those things and it is a decision from the club that has been made".
