Please send congratulatory dog treats and wrinkle cream to Martha the Neapolitan mastiff, for yesterday she was crowned the ugliest dog in the world.

At 3 years old and 125 pounds, Martha on Friday night pawed her way to the top at this year's 29th annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest in Petaluma, California, where she was awarded $1,500, a trophy and a trip to NY for camera appearances.

The only animal in this year's contest too big to be held by her handler, Martha beat out 13 other dogs, a lot of them the kind of older, smaller dogs who win here.

She was rescued when she was almost blind.

Along with the prestigious title, Martha won $1,500 dollars (£1,170) and a trip to NY. Moe, a 16-year-old Brussels Griffon-pug mix, came in second.

The criteria the dogs are judged on include audience reaction, first impressions and unusual attributes.

The homely hounds and their humans arrived hours before the show to socialize and size up the competition. Monkey, a six-year-old Brussels Griffon, and Icky, an eight-year-old unknown breed, were both rescued from the homes of hoarders.

A blind Chihuahua-Chinese Crested mix named Sweepee Rambo bested 16 other ugly entries in last year's competition and waddled away with $1,500, a trophy and a flight to NY with her owner for media appearances. But for their owners, it was love at first sight.

The 29th annual contest held in Petaluma, CA featured 14 of the world's ugliest canines, who competed for a trophy and a $1,500 prize.

The annual event took place Friday night at the Sonoma-Marin Fair.
