LSU beats Oregon State 6-1 to reach CWS finals

While there were some surprises leading up to the College World Series Finals, two elite teams will battle for the 2017 national championship.

"Our sports information director told the team the story of the 1989 team that had to beat a 58-5 Texas A&M team twice in the same day to come to Omaha, and they did", LSU coach Paul Mainieri said.

The Tigers did, in impressive fashion.

A total of 62 teams have now been eliminated and two SEC members, Florida and Louisiana State, will square off in the best-of-three College World Series Finals beginning Monday, June 26.

The Gators and Tigers met each other in the regular season in Gainesville, Fla., in March, and the Gators won the first two games before LSU salvaged the finale. "But that's why you have to play the games and our kids embraced the challenge".

LSU took on Oregon State on Monday knowing it had to win two of three anticipated games against the Beavers to reach the CWS finals.

"I've always said it's not who you play in your league, it's when you play them because we all go through ups and downs", Gators coach Kevin O'Sullivan said Sunday during a pre-series press conference.

"I know there will be a time when they get to sit back and reflect and realize what they accomplished", he said.

Michael Gretler homered with one away in the top of the eighth, putting the Beavers (56-6) on the board and ending the day for Gilbert. Gilbert struck out a career-high seven.

Papierski became the first college player to hit two home runs in the same game at TD Ameritrade Park.

Yes, A Fighter Did Indeed Poop Their Pants At UFC Fight Night
Oklahoma City hosted UFC Fight Night on Sunday which featured a women's strawweight bout between Felice Herrig and Justine Kish . While Herrig's win was certainly impressive, however, this fight got people talking for another, very different reason.

He was backed by Papierski, who homered from the left side off Bryce Fehmel in the second inning (a three-run shot) and from the right side off Brandon Eisert in the fourth (a solo blast).

Since 2003, the only top-eight national seeds to win the CWS were LSU (2009) and SC (2011). In the first Winner's Bracket, the Beavers saw their toughest competition yet with CSU Fullerton when Fullerton went up a quick 5-1 in the 4th inning but the Beavers rallied back in the bottom of the 6th to tie it and then ended up scoring again in the 8th to end up winning 6-5 to advance.

LSU's just living right.

LSU knocked Fehmel from the game in the third frame after Kramer Robertson walked, went to second on a groundout and scored when Antoine Duplantis scalded a ball off the glove of diving second baseman Nick Madrigal and into center field.

"If we're going to do that (hold Lange until Wednesday)", Mainieri said, "the thought was we might as well give Poché five days rest".

Alex Faedo pitched three-hit ball for 7 1/3 shutout innings in a second straight strong performance against TCU, and Florida moved to the College World Series finals with a 3-0 win. He might even start his closer, Michael Byrne on Tuesday.

In the fifth inning, Rivera was hit by a pitch. "I guess whoever gets the job done in big situations will come out on top". "Both teams have great players". Kowar threw him out at first.

Florida's offense can struggle to score runs at times, but its strength can be found in its pitching staff headlined by junior right-hander Alex Faedo (2.26 ERA). He's worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings over his last three relief appearances, allowing one hit with one strikeout.

"We didn't get out-efforted". "I felt good about our attitude and our effort".

"The best part of baseball is hitting home runs", Florida slugger JJ Schwartz said. "And they deserve to be in the championship, and best of luck to them".
