Lee shot the original She's Gotta Have It in just 12 days on a shoestring budget, but the film ended up grossing over $7 million at the U.S. box office. I'll admit that I've never seen it, but I don't doubt the film's impact - it launched the monumental career of Lee, of course. Lee told Deadline his "biggest regret" was the film's rape scene. "I was immature and I hate that I did not view rape as the vile act that it is".

The film's 1986 release was momentous for black people in the film industry. "For an independent shoestring production by a black man about black people, it was astounding". Now, thirty-one years later Lee will be airing the film as a ten-part series to air on Netflix Thursday, November 23. They first aired it during the BET Awards, and fans are excited.
