Trump visit to Britain left out of Queen's speech

Ministers insisted Donald Trump's controversial visit to Britain will go ahead despite it not being listed in the Queen's Speech setting out the Government's programme for the next two years.

Trump reportedly told May in a phone call that he would not undertake a visit until the British public opinion turned.

The Queen's speech usually mentions any state visits planned for the duration of the parliament, but Wednesday, she said she and Prince Philip "look forward to welcoming their majesties King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain on a state visit in July".

Downing Street refused to comment, saying only that the invitation, which was given by Mrs May on behalf of the Queen when she met Mr Trump in Washington in January, remained unchanged.

A Number 10 spokesman said the President's visit wasn't included in the Queen's Speech "because a date hasn't been fixed yet".

"The formality is that you can not put the date of the president's state visit into the Queen's Speech until it has been actually agreed".

Nearly two million people signed a petition urging Theresa May to rescind the invitation due to several decisions and statements made by Trump since he took over the Oval Office.

Johnson earlier this month said Trump's visit should go ahead as planned, despite an ongoing row between the U.S. president and London Mayor Sadiq Khan in the wake of the terrorist attacks in the United Kingdom capital. Trump had initially criticised Khan for his response to the London Bridge terrorist attack, in doing so, he misquoted London's mayor.

Mr Khan's spokesperson described the remark as "ill-informed", but two days later Mr Trump doubled down by accusing the mayor of giving a "pathetic excuse". Some raised questions about whether the state visit was postponed due to the omission.
