Daniel Ricciardo will join Mercedes" Valtteri Bottas in the "demoted drivers club' following an unscheduled gearbox change on the #3 Red Bull.

Despite having set the slowest time in Qualifying, Ricciardo will be starting in nineteenth thanks to a thirty-place grid penalty for Fernando Alonso.

Ricciardo had been leading the timesheets for much of Q1, however, he was forced to stop his Red Bull half way through the session and with conditions improving, he plummeted down the timesheets and was knocked out of qualifying.

"It sounded a little bit sick, that was the first thing, then I lost a bit of power and heard some weird turbo noises", he said. I know the feeling with the vehicle is not where it can be, so for sure there is laptime on the table. "We were quick straight out of the box today and I was P1 before the failure, so we look pretty good on the intermediate tyre".

"It stayed running and then it all switched off".

Ricciardo has finished on the podium in each of the last five races, including winning in Azerbaijan, but will now start Sunday's grand prix on the back foot. "Obviously tomorrow is another day - I'm just disappointed not to be able to show more of what we can do in qualifying. We will see what happens but I know that the guys will assess everything now". We were lacking the speed and therefore unable to get close to the Mercedes and Ferraris but the vehicle still felt good so I had fun out there. "In the end we didn't get the right balance or feeling, so we will make some changes tonight and have a better auto tomorrow". "Mixed weather could hopefully help me out but I think in either these or dry conditions we can fight through the field and get inside the top ten".
