Choi responded with a par on 17 and a birdie on 18 to claim sole possession of second place, thanks to Feng taking a triple bogey on the final hole to fall into a fifth-place tie with Carlota Ciganda and Jeongeun6 Lee.

Feng was frustrated by her putting until the par-five last hole.

Park Sung-hyun holds the championship trophy at Trump National Golf Club after the final round of the U.S. Women's Open in Bedminster, New Jersey on Sunday.

She had earlier been caught by Korean pair Amy Yang (70) and Hye Jin Choi (70) - with the latter in contention to become the first amateur to land a major for 50 years.

Mi Jung Hur and 2011 Women's Open champion So Yeon Ryu, both of South Korea, tied for third at 7-under 281 after rounds of 68 and 70, respectively.

President Donald Trump watched the final round from a viewing tent behind the 16th tee.

Choi, the 17-year-old who is the world's No.2 ranked amateur, might have been the most consistent player after bogeying her first hole.

"I get the runner-up, and it is unbelievably joyous for me", she said. She has followed with six more US LPGA titles, most recently winning in May at Ann Arbor, Michigan. She's the only woman to be the Rolex Player of the Year and Rolex Rookie of the Year in the same season and that was way back in 1978. But her downfall came on the par-3 16th, when her tee shot from 145 yards flared off short and right into the water. Her total of 279 beat the old amateur record, set by Grace Park in 1999, by four strokes.

A birdie at 17 and a tricky up-and-down on 18 saw her post the winning clubhouse score as her nearest rivals faltered behind her. Park's birdie was one of only four scored on that hole all day.

She can float as a major champion.

"I was trying to squeeze that distance, and maybe that extra effort somehow ended up in the missed shot", Choi said.

Sung Hyun Park gained a reputation in her native South Korea as being an aggressive player, so aggressive that fans there gave her a nickname that loosely translates in English to "Shut your mouth and attack".

A birdie on the par-five first proved to be her last of the day, but none of those with holes remaining look likely to catch the 27-year-old. So I think the repetition and practice that I carried out probably paid off. Park played the weekend in 67-67 after an opening-round 73.

"I think one of the most hard things is to stay focused and keep that concentration level up because I know firsthand that once you lose it, your play is going to just go sideways".

"I was hitting the ball perfectly, and at 16, I tried to hit even more perfectly, which made it a missed shot instead of a ideal shot", Choi said through an interpreter.
