Netanyahu hailed the "special heroism" of the French resistance to the Nazis, praising the "noble French citizens who at great risk to their own lives" saved thousands more Jews from perishing in the death camps where at least 6-million died between 1941 and 1945.

"It seems the values of the French revolution - equality, fraternity, liberty - was crushed brutally under the boot of anti-Semitism", Mr Netanyahu told an audience in Paris, which included Jewish groups and Holocaust survivors. "They try to destroy us, but also they try to destroy you".

Netanyahu thanked also the French President for hosting him in this tragic anniversary and stressed the deep and old friendship between the French and Israeli states.

He also spoke about the murder of Sarah Halimi, a Jewish woman killed last April. The Jewish community must know that we, the veterans, did not abandon them.

Mr Macron called it a "natural gesture" to invite Netanyahu.

Macron addressed Netanyahu with his nickname "Bibi" at the start of his speech at the commemoration ceremony.
