Russian foreign minister calls seizure of U.S. compounds 'daylight robbery'

Apparently alluding to Trump, Mr Peskov said he hoped the U.S. would be able to show some "political wisdom".

Peskov said any USA preconditions to return the property would be unacceptable for Moscow and said Washington's failure to hand back the compounds ran counter to global law.

"We have repeatedly said that we think any conditions are unacceptable". "Contacts are happening between the foreign policy departments".

President Vladimir Putin raised the issue with Donald Trump when they met for the first time at the G20 summit in Hamburg this month.

Bilateral ties worsened after the expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats from the US and the closure of two Russian diplomatic compounds in late December by then-President Barack Obama for Moscow's alleged role in hacking elections to favor the campaign of Donald Trump.

CNN has reached out to the White House for comment.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova complained that the USA was also refusing to issue visas for Russian diplomats to replace those expelled. "I want to confirm that the retaliatory measures are in the works", Zakharova told reporters. "Let us not get ahead of ourselves". And, you know, some excessive words can only do harm.

"We continue to hope that political wisdom and political will will be shown by our American counterparts [in the issue of returning the Russian diplomatic property]", TASS cited spokesman as saying.
