Most other Asian markets edged higher after the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 Index closed at record highs on Friday following soft US inflation and retail sales data that pushed back bets of Federal Reserve rate increases. The 30-share BSE Sensex gained 54.03 points to close at 32,074.78 while the broader 50-share NSE Nifty closed at 9,915.95, up by 29.60 points.

Globally, China's blue-chip CSI300 index ended the day 1.1 per cent down at 3,663.56, while the Shanghai Composite Index plunged1.4 per cent to 3,176.46 even as the country's GDP grew by 6.9 per cent exceeding market expectations.

Top gainers on Monday included Wipro, Ultratech Cement, Vedanta, HCL Tech, Adani Ports, ICICI Bank, Cipla, Zee Entertainment and Infosys while ITC, Coal India, Yes Bank, Dr Reddy's Labs, Axis Bank, GAIL and Maruti Suzuki declined.
