Valverde Relieved to Have 'Unique' Messi at Barca

Spanish media outlet Don Balon claimed that Barca had offered the midfielder to Paris St-Germain as bait for Italian midfield sensation Marco Verratti.

Both Valverde and Barcelona's technical secretary Robert Fernandez spoke on Monday and were coy when quizzed about the club's pursuit of Paris Saint Germain midfielder Marco Veratti.

New Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde is hoping to recruit more players as he looks to bolster his side ahead of next season. "For me, the best signings are those who are in my team", Valverde told reporters.

"My intention is to have the best squad possible, but it's hard to make it much better because of what we have here", Valverde said in a news conference on Monday amid a barrage of questions about Verratti.

"If it happens, then that would be great". That's how I work, with the players I have here. "Many names get linked and the summer is long, but for me, the important thing is to get the best out of the players I have".

'I want to have the best squad possible but it's hard to improve because we already have the best players here'.

"He can play in different areas of the pitch and we know he can play deeper and help construct the play but it is in the final third where we want him to finish up; that's where he really makes the difference for us".

Although there's plenty of time to go before the transfer window slams shut, Barcelona have still failed to add a quality midfielder to the squad.

Questioned on Barca's interest in Brazilian midfielder, Paulinho, Valverde stuck to the same line, saying: "It's hard to improve what we have in the team".

"We're not closed to any options until the last day but I think that's the same for any club".
