This incident has also caused several delays in the arrivals at Gatwick airport as no plane could land until the flight of Air Canada to come back to earth.

All flights have been re-routed to the airport's backup runway, setting of delays and cancellations for some travellers.

The airport explained that it had been forced to close the main runway after takeoff, and then again after the aircraft returned, to ensure that there was no debris on the ground.

All inbound and outbound flights have since been halted for more than an hour with inspectons still taking place on the runway.

Shortly after, officials made a decision to close the airport's main runway for the rest of the day. Passengers should check with their airline before travelling to the airport for information about their specific flight.

"As per standard operation procedures and as a precautionary measure the crew requested emergency services presence after a tyre blew upon take-off".

The airline said it was working to get the passengers on their way as quickly as possible.
