The White House announced Saturday the appointment of Washington lawyer Ty Cobb as special counsel, after reports that President Trump's advisors were looking to beef up the in-house team defending him in the growing Russian Federation scandal.

Ty Cobb - a former federal prosecutor - has been hired to coordinate the White House response to the investigations into the Trump campaign's ties to Russian Federation, according to reports.

Revelations this week of his son Donald Trump Jr's June 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer whom Trump Jr believed to be bringing him damaging information on Hillary Clinton has renewed a sense of urgency in the White House to firm up its strategy on the Russia investigations, White House aides said.

The Republican president drew criticism last week from Democrats who accused him of not pressing Putin hard enough at a meeting they held in Germany over Moscow's alleged interference in the 2016 US presidential campaign.

Trump has said he wants to work with Moscow on issues like Syria, and told reporters traveling with him on Air Force One to Paris that he was open to the idea of inviting Putin to the White House at some point.

The FEC filing shows that Donald J. Trump for President, Inc. disbursed $50,000 for "legal consulting" to Alan Futerfas's law firm, which had been hired to represent Trump Jr., on June 27.

The US intelligence community alleged that Russia meddled in the US presidential race a year ago and there were connections between the Russian government and the Trump campaign.

Trump 2020 campaign committees have spent almost $700,000 on legal fees between the beginning of April and the end of June, according to the FEC reports. He also has experience working with leaks.

The president's team also recently contacted another high-profile Washington lawyer, Emmet Flood, a partner at Williams & Connolly, who had previously rejected Trump's entreaties. Others on the Russia-response team include lawyer Jay Sekulow, a frequent TV surrogate for Trump, and Mark Corallo, a public relations consultant.

Federal special counsel Robert Mueller and several congressional panels are investigating those allegations. We are now helping Abbe's team.

Asked whether the campaign is allowed to pay for Trump, Jr.'s legal fees if that turns out to be the case, former FEC general counsel Lawrence Noble, a CNN contributor, said: "They can pay for his legal expenses if it arises out of the campaign".
