Chevy Breaks NASCAR Sedan Conventions With 2018 Camaro ZL1 Stock Car

The Camaro ZL1 will make its competitive debut next February during Daytona Speedweeks, which annually kicks off the 2018 NASCAR season. The Camaro SS has been Chevy's entry in the second-rung Xfinity Series since 2013, and it also ran in the Grand American Series back in 1968-1971, against the other pony cars of the day, like the Ford Mustang and AMC Javelin. Making its official debut to the motoring public is the all-new Camaro ZL1 Cup Car.

Chevy-powered teams in the Xfinity Series now run the pony vehicle, but for Jimmie Johnson, who won seven Cup championships with the "bow tie", the new auto will be the first Camaro racer he's driven in his Cup career.

Unveiled with the No. 8 - Chevy founder Louis Chevrolet's race number - adorning its body, the Camaro ZL1 will be the only Cup auto that's inspired by a two-door sports vehicle.

"I think we've got opportunities at the very low end of the Camaro range and some remix of some of the V8 options on it so we don't force people to buy all the options with a V8, just to get a V8", Reuss said.

The Camaro ZL1 brings a unique, track-focused legacy to NASCAR.

The Camaro ZL1 is the new Chevrolet race car of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. It makes its competition debut next February with the start of the 2018 season

The ZL1 badge was first used in the '60s on a Chevrolet-developed engine which found success in road racing. The Mustang GT and Challenger R/T can be ordered with a V8 for about $4,000 less, which has Chevrolet reconsidering the available trim packages for the pony vehicle.

It was Kansas City, Mo. -based Chevrolet dealer and drag racer Dick Harrell, known as Mr. Chevrolet, who originally joined Yenko and Gibb in approaching Vince Piggins, the man behind various Chevrolet performance projects during the 1960s, with a request to use COPO paperwork to build 427 CID Camaros. The cars became instant legends on the street and dragstrip. Over 40 years after the ZL1 returns to the sales floor with track ready performance.

The new Camaro ZL1 race auto builds on a winning legacy carried by the previous Chevrolet SS, which has scored 70 Cup Series wins to date and contributed to Chevrolet earning a record 39 NASCAR manufacturer titles - including 13 consecutive titles from 2003-2015.

The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will replace the Chevy SS which has been in competition since 2013.
