CCTV footage shows Vikas Barala buying alcohol before stalking

A CCTV camera footage showing the two accused, Vikas Barala and his accomplice Ashish, buying liquor from an outlet in Sector 9 Chandigarh has surfaced in the high profile Varnika Kundu stalking and attempted abduction case.

Key accused in Chandigarh stalking case Vikas Barala and his friend Ashish have been sent to judicial custody till August 25 on Saturday by a local court.

Defence counsel Surya Prakash said: "both the youths have been sent to 14 days of judicial custody". However, based on the public prosecutor's plea, the court granted two-day police custody of the accused on grounds that they were needed to reconstruct the crime scene and establishing motive behind the crime. The victim, Varnika Kundu, is the daughter of an IAS officer. Vikas along with his friend were arrested when they appeared in Chandigarh Sector 26 Police Station after being summoned in the case on Thursday. Vikas is the son of Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Haryana unit President Subhash Barala.

However, following media pressure, the police later arrested them again after charging them with non-bailable sections of attempt to abduction (section 365 and 511 of the Indian Penal Code). Meanwhile, Subhash Barala said that his son will cooperate fully with the police in the investigation and if he is found guilty even during the investigation, the law will take action against him.

On Wednesday, while addressing the media over the incident, DGP Chandigarh said that after a detailed interrogation of the two accused, the police has chose to add 2 more charges including an attempt to kidnap. They were, however, granted bail the same day.
