Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai offers to quit over corruption charges

However, CM Devendra Fadnavis rejected the offer and asked Desai to continue, telling him that there was no reason for him to quit because the charges were baseless and politically motivated.

Speaking to India Today over phone, minister Subhash Desai confirmed this that on Saturday morning he met CM Fadnavis and offered his resignation.

In the monsoon session of the state Assembly, opposition Congress and the NCP have demanded the resignations of Desai (75) and Housing Minister Prakash Mehta (58) from the BJP over corruption charges. The Opposition is demanding for his resignation as well.

I have now made a decision to face the inquiry with utmost transparency."Fadnavis spoke to Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and both agreed that the resignation should not be accepted".

"Desai told me that he wanted to stay away till the inquiry is over". The two ministers visited Fadnavis at his official residence, Varsha, but the chief minister refused to accept their resignations and said they should face a probe in their current capacities. The Opposition termed the resignations and the CM's subsequent refusal as "political drama to shield the tainted ministers".The accepted precedent is that once a probe is announced, the minister concerned has to resign or at least relinquish the department, which he heads and is linked to the allegations he faces.

Thackeray said that even CM Fadnavis told him that there is no need for Desai to tender his resignation since the Opposition was leveling allegations with a political goal.

While Desai faces charges of de-notifying the land belonging to Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation in Nashik to favour a builder, Mehta has been accused of preferring a builder for a slum development authority project in Mumbai.

The most important charge that Mehta is fighting is that he had kept the CM in the dark while transferring FSI to a particular builder.

Mr Desai also spoke to Mr Thackeray on the issue. Mehta had earlier said that he would abide by whatever the Chief Minister says. He said there was no need for the resignation.

Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant slammed the BJP and Sena for being farcical when it came to corruption. Leader of Opposition in legislative council Dhananjay Munde said the government has proved that it is a "corrupt government". "Probe can not be independent and impartial when the tainted ministers remain in office", said Munde, asking for the resignations at any cost.
