Two American troopers have been executed while leading battle operations in Iraq, the US military said Sunday, including that "underlying reports demonstrate the occurrence was not because of foe contact".

Central Command said in a statement that five other soldiers were wounded in Sunday's incident, without providing further details.

The military said in a statement the initial reports indicated the incident was not due to enemy contact.

Lt. Gen. Stephen Townsend, the administrator of USA strengths doing combating the Islamic State aggregate in Iraq, said the coalition "sends our most profound sympathies to these legends' families, companions and partners".

The incident took place in the eastern German city of Dresden on Saturday morning, German media report , citing local police. The American also had insignia of " unconstitutional organizations, which includes Nazi symbols ", Deutsche Welle reported .

The Islamic State is increasingly on the defensive in Iraq and Syria after its defeat in the Iraqi city of Mosul and as US -backed forces advance in the militant group's onetime stronghold in the Syrian city of Raqqa.

US troops have been helping support Iraqi forces battling the Islamic State group - "a truly evil enemy" in the words of Lt. Gen. Stephen J. Townsend, Operation Inherent Resolve commander.

Military "advisers" from several countries have also been aiding federal Iraqi forces on the frontlines.

"There are no words to describe the respect I have for you and sorrow I have for your loss", Lt. Gen. Townsend continued.
