The death toll includes two Virginia State Police officers who were killed when their helicopter crashed near Charlottesville. They had not released her name as of Saturday evening.

Matt Korbon, a 22-year-old University of Virginia student, said counter-protesters were marching when "suddenly there was just this tire screeching sound".

A dozen medics were seen carting the injured back and forth on stretchers.

After hours of clashes, a silver sedan driving at high speed ploughed into the crowd before reversing along the same street.

But at no point did Trump mention white supremacists, white nationalists or groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis, whose participation in the event and inflammatory rhetoric precipitated numerous violent skirmishes before the fatal auto collision.

President Trump condemned the violence in a news conference Saturday afternoon.

During his speech, Trump labeled the unrest in Virginia as "terrible events".

The collision followed a morning of violent clashes between far-right groups and counterprotesters, prompting Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe to declare a state of emergency. "What is vital now is a swift restoration of law and order and the protection of innocent lives".

The auto attack occurred around 1pm, soon after a state of emergency was declared in the city for the clashes between participants in the march and those opposed to it. Authorities declared an unlawful assembly and police ordered people to disperse.

Mark Herring, Virginia's attorney general, immediately tweeted that the "violence, chaos, and apparent loss of life in Charlottesville is not the fault of 'many sides.' It is racists and white supremacists". Please all-go home to your families. "I place the blame for a lot of what you're seeing in American today right at the doorstep of the White House and the people around the president". "But my message is clear". You have made our commonwealth stronger. There is no place for you here.

In attendance were KKK Imperial Wizard David Duke, alt-right leader Richard Spencer as well as Jason Kessler who organized the rally. According to AP, the individual suspected of being behind the wheel of the auto during the attack is in custody.

Some rally supporters were reportedly dressed in military clothing and others Nazi symbols. Another read "diversity is just a genocidal scam".

The turbulence began Friday night, when the white nationalists carried torches though the university campus in what they billed as a "pro-white" demonstration.
