Yankees place Masahiro Tanaka on disabled list

The New York Yankees have put right-hander Masahiro Tanaka on the 10-day disabled list because of shoulder inflammation.

"I don't think this will be too long", manager Joe Girardi said. Unfortunately, he joins C.C. Sabathia as recent additions to the Yankees' DL.

Having gone just four innings while issuing five free passes in his last start, it's clear that this issue has come up just recently for Tanaka. After the game, Tanaka told the team he was ailing. Team doctors determined there is "nothing structural.but we decided he needs a break". Asked about it, Girardi said "you can run out of starters". Rather, Tanaka was feeling more worn out.

Tanaka won't throw for five days and said he then plans to resume his throwing program. "I know this is going to be a relatively short time off and I believe this time off will get me back stronger and back on track".

The Japanese righthander can opt out of the final three years and $67 million of his $155 million contract this offseason, but he's just 8-10 with a 4.79 ERA in 133.2 innings over 23 starts.

The 28-year-old was brilliant two starts ago when he pitched eight innings of one-run ball against the Rays, carrying a ideal game into the sixth inning.

Girardi said that Bryan Mitchell and Luis Cessa are the likely candidates to take Tanaka's next turn Monday against the Mets.

It looked like the Yankees had a surplus of starting pitching less than two weeks ago.
