NY joins 14 other states in suit over DACA

Schneiderman led a coalition of 16 Attorneys General in filing suit to protect Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) grantees.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of ny, alleges that the Trump administration violated the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution by discriminating against DACA beneficiaries of Mexican origin, who make up 78 percent of DACA recipients.

Schneiderman has issued a public health alert warning of deadly fentanyl pills seized during an ongoing opioid investigation in Western New York.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, along with fourteen additional states and the District of Columbia, filed a lawsuit September 7 challenging Trump's decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Act (DACA). Dreamers play by the rules.

Shapiro says 87 percent of Pennsylvania's DACA recipients are employed, bringing in an estimated $20 million in tax revenue to the Commonwealth.

The pills were likely mixed by hand by drug traffickers, Schneiderman said, so there is no way for an unsuspecting user to know exactly how much fentanyl is in each pill. "I will do everything in my power to restore DACA for the tens of thousands of young people in North Carolina who rely on it - including fighting for them in court".

Handling the case for NY was assistant attorney general Kate Matuschak under the supervision of deputy bureau chief Laura J. Levine and bureau chief Jane Azia, all of the Consumer Frauds and Protection Bureau.

Fifteen states, including CT, plus the District of Columbia, are part of the suit that was filed in the Eastern District of NY.

Congress has six months, Rottinghaus said, to address immigration reform with specific legislation to protect DACA recipients and maintain the program in some form.

"If it goes through the process of being voted on and being debated, we will not sue, if it is passed by Congress", he said.

"To me, DACA represented security and a chance to strive in this country that I love". There are about 42,000 New Yorkers in the program.

"When they made a promise that they would be looking after and defending these members of our community, they have shown it, they have done it", Figueroa said.

The states said the administration's decision to revoke DACA was arbitrary and failed to provide notice as required by federal law.

"The Trump administration's decision to end DACA is cruel, inhumane and devastating", Mr Schneiderman said in a statement. Most people covered by the program are in their 20s. "And New York's statutes reiterate the State's strong interest in combatting discrimination and prejudice".
