Mercedes-AMG Project One revealed: F1 on the road

With just a few days to go before the official unveiling of the Project One, Mercedes-AMG has released another teaser image - this time around showing the rear of the auto.

Sure, we are actually just minutes away from the official reveal of the Mercedes-AMG Project One, but thanks to the embargo breach of the Germans from Bild we can give you the first five photos of the model. We thought this was nothing more than a form of speech used to create hype but we were wrong.

The drivetrain's centrepiece is a mid-mounted 1.6-litre V6 with two electric motors - one bolted directly to the crankshaft to provide additional torque, the second to eliminate lag for the engine's massive turbocharger.

From what we know so far, the road version of the engine will idle at around 2,000 rpm and rev to approximately 11,000 rpm, which still makes it go well past the "insane" threshold. Although it likely doesn't appeal to anyone purchasing the Project One, the hypercar will be capable of travelling up to 15.5 miles (25 kilometers) on electric power alone.

Mercedes AMG Project One

The Mercedes-AMG Project One concept and the four-door AMG GT Concept provide a preview of the future performance-hybrid drive strategy of the sports auto brand within Mercedes-Benz. The mid-engine setup is capable of reaching speeds of 11,000 rpm, which is now unique for a production, road-going vehicle.

Two more 161bhp motors drive the front wheels to turn the Project ONE into an all-wheel-drive hybrid hypercar.

A monstrous carbonfibre stabilising "shark fin" incorporates the roof-mounted engine intake tract that feeds air to the turbo, while the LED headlight and tail light designs mimic the AMG badge with three separated rhomboids. These have adjustable backs and fixed bases, so the pedals and steering wheel adjust instead - a similar setup to the Ford GT. The Frankfurt Moto Show takes place between the 14th and 24th of September.

Just 275 examples of the Project One will be built, with each selling for around A$3 million.
