Hughes hits back at Mourinho

Jose Mourinho says recent history proves it takes a defensive mindset to win the Premier League, although he insists his Manchester United side can buck that trend.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored a goal in each half as Hughes's men ended United's 100 per cent record in the Premier League this season by earning a 2-2 draw at bet365 stadium.

"It's always important if you can come from behind, and I think we showed spirit".

"They weren't performing at their normal level but we were in the game, we fought hard and we were closer to winning than losing".

United made a slow start to the second half but took the lead when Romelu Lukaku was played through by Henrikh Mkhitaryan and although the Belgian's first effort was saved, he made no mistake with the rebound to score his fifth goal of the season.

And the Red Devils boss refused to criticise Lukaku for wasting a chance to win the game.

Close-season signing Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is working hard to be fit to face United after returning from worldwide duty with Cameroon nursing a slight hamstring injury.

Iraq MPs vote against Kurdish referendum
Kurdish MPs reportedly walked out of the session before the vote and issued statements afterwards rejecting the decision.

The Reds have enjoyed a flying start to the Premier League season, recording three wins and three clean sheets whilst scoring 10 goals to top the table at the end of August, but face a tough first game after the global break with a trip to Stoke City on Saturday.

"I am happy with Lukaku with or without goals because his contribution is good", said Mourinho.

"I am a team player and when the manager needs me I will be there and that's it".

United return to top-flight action with a trip to Stoke City on Saturday before kicking off the Champions League group stage with the visit of Basel. "(Stoke) defended a lot and it is becoming quite trendy in the Premier League, this way of defending now.

"One team wanted to win, another team wanted to draw", Mourinho said.

That Europa League win ensured entry into this season's Champions League and placed them back among Europe's elite.

Although the result saw United's ideal start to 2017-18 ended, Mourinho says that optimism remains around Old Trafford.
