Liverpool haven't won silverware since 2012 when they won the league cup and have not had their hands on the Champions League trophy since 2005, which was as a result of the infamous "Miracle of Istanbul".

"[Leaving Coutinho out against Man City] was a decision made with the season in mind", Klopp said, as reported on LiverpoolFC.com.

'I think he is doing a good job. He has brought in some of the players he wanted. Huddersfield wanted to sign the Welsh worldwide on loan again this season following a successful spell last season, but Klopp's refusal to allow him to leave suggests that he will get some first-team action at Anfield this season.

And when asked if Klopp's men have the wherewithal to win the Champions League, he was forthright: 'It depends. You can't play them any better than that.

"With Phil (playing), we haven't created more chances against City in the past".

On the specific absence of Coutinho's incisive passing, Klopp added: "We score a lot of goals and all the players on the pitch play these passes".

According to the Spanish paper Coutinho and Liverpool will part companies anytime in January or next summer if the Brazilian won't be included in the Reds' squad list for their first Champions League clash in two years.
