National Transportation Safety Board releases preliminary report on Troy Gentry's crash

Federal investigators have released a preliminary report into Friday's helicopter crash in Medford, New Jersey that killed a country music star.

The National Transportation Safety Board has issued its preliminary report on Troy Gentry's fatal helicopter crash on September 8. Both men were killed when the helicopter went down south of the Flying W Airport in Medford, New Jersey.

The document reportedly states that the pilot "was unable to control engine rpm with throttle inputs", which TMZ translates to mean "the engine was not responding to the throttle inputs, so the pilot on the doomed aircraft had lost control".

"During the descent, the rotor rpm decayed to the point where the instructor could see the individual rotor blades", the report said.

Radio communication between emergency responders and the pilot reveal that an emergency landing was in the works, reports Billboard. It began the maneuver about 950 feet above ground level and crashed about 220 feet short of the runway, according to the report. "No sound could be heard from the helicopter".

The report indicated that the helicopter's cockpit was "significantly deformed" by the impact and that its tail became separated from the vehicle fuselage.
