Filmmaker JJ Abrams is returning to the Star Wars franchise, taking over to direct the latest movie, which will be filmed at Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire.

The project faced extra pressure after the unexpected death late past year of actress Carrie Fisher, who reprised her role as Princess Leia/General Organa in the new films and had been expected to play a prominent role in Episode IX. "The Force Awakens" earned over $2 billion at worldwide box office and became the third-highest grossing film of all time.

While doing a Japanese press tour for the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi, writer-director Rian Johnson announced that actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises, 500 Days of Summer) will be appearing in a small cameo role in the upcoming film. He produced and directed movies in the revamped Star Trek franchise, as well as worked on blockbuster hits such as "Armageddon" and "Mission Impossible: III".

"Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy praised Abrams" appointment in a statement. Abrams will co-write the new picture with Chris Terrio, Disney said on Tuesday (Sept 12) on its website. "With "The Force Awakens, ' J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy". What infuriate some fans, very few are convinced by his film the real air of a remake of Star Wars Episode IV.

Russell Westbrook signs 10-year extension with Jordan Brand
He's also eligible for a five-year contract extension this offseason that could pay him more than $235 million over six seasons. Russell Westbrook averaged a triple-double on his way to the 2016-2017 NBA MVP, and he did it while rocking Jordan Brand.

Lucasfilm has split with several directors over the course of the franchise's life.

"Star Wars: Episode IX" is part of Disney's expanding slate of "Star Wars" films that continue George Lucas' Skywalker saga as well as introducing standalone spin-off films set within the galaxy far, far away.

Oscar-winning director Ron Howard was brought in to oversee the remainder of the film's production.
