Tropical Storm Jose expected to become a hurricane by Wednesday night

Tropical Storm Katia has formed in the Gulf of Mexico, just east of Tampico, Mexico.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the storm's winds are up to 75 miles per hour, with some strengthening forecast over the next two days. The storm was expected to weaken rapidly over the next day, the NHC said. Hurricane Irma is a Category 5 hurricane, and was approaching Grand Turk island early Thursday evening. Storms of Category 3 and above are defined as major hurricanes.

However, Jose is coming behind Hurricane Irma, a risky Category 5 hurricane that the National Hurricane Center is calling "potentially catastrophic".

Hurricane Katia strengthens to Category 3
Hurricane Irma , one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in a century, made landfall in Cuba on Friday as a Category 5 storm. Though it's unusual for three hurricanes to be active in the Atlantic basin at the same time, it's not without precedent.

The peak of Atlantic hurricane season is around September 10, so it's not uncommon for storms to form during this time of year.

Veracruz state officials said in a statement on Friday that the storm could cause landslides and flooding, and urged people living below hills and slopes to be prepared to evacuate.

Hurricane Irma, a Category Five storm further to the west, is now battering the Caribbean and threatening Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba and south Florida.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 70 milesfrom the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles.
