Wenger reveals he turned down chance to replace Ferguson at Manchester United

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that he had rejected Manchester Unitedwhen the club came calling in 2001 to replace Sir Alex Ferguson. One day it would be a good chat to have with the press to look at the evolution. Wenger was vindicated by his decision, as the Gunners went on to lift the double in 2002 and then carried on to win the title two years later by going an entire season unbeaten.

Although Wenger seriously considered it, he eventually continued at the Emirates. "We made our approach and Wenger did show a little bit of interest, enough to want to meet [chief executive] Peter Kenyon and me at his house in London".

Wenger has now confirmed that was true, but insists he turned the offer down due to believing Arsenal possessed greater "values" as a club. "But I hope he stays in it for a very long time..."'

Speaking over the weekend, he said: "You speak about Man United, the evolution in the last 20 years would be very interesting".
