The disgraced cult leader, who is lodged in Rohtak's Sunaria jail on charges of rape, appeared via video- conferencing.

The same judge who convicted Guru Ram Rahim Singh for rape of two women followers last month began hearing - in the same court in Panchkula - two murder cases against the Dera Sacha Sauda chief on Saturday.

The cops were arrested in Panchkula where they were called to join the investigation, said Panchkula Deputy Commissioner of Police Manbir Singh. Khatta Singh had earlier given a statement in favour of the sect chief in the murder cases but now claimed that he did it under threat and pressure from the sect chief.

Furthermore, after Chhatrapati published the anonymous letter in his daily, the journalist was subsequently shot shot dead from point-blank range right outside his house on October 24, 2002. Ram Rahim has been accused of criminal conspiracy in a case registered under section 365 of IPC for kidnap. He has been named as the main conspirator in the cases.

Meanwhile, a key Dera Sacha Sauda functionary has been arrested in connection with the violence that broke out after the conviction of Ram Rahim Singh. It will take some time for the case to come to its final hearing and for the court to announce its final decision.

The Dera chief will face trial in the two cases in the special CBI court through video conferencing.

The agency also launched a separate murder probe, ultimately filing a charge-sheet accusing Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh of ordering the two murders. The arguments in the case were held under thick blanket of security. According to the prosecution, he was murdered for his suspected role in circulating an anonymous letter which made allegations of sexual exploitation against the Dera chief.

15 years ago, Ram Rahim's Sharp Shooters had killed Ramchandra Chattrapati's shootout on November 21, 2002. The 50-year-old self-styled godman is already serving a punishment of 20-year imprisonment at Rohtak prison for raping two of his women devotees.
