It wasn't until Daptone Records co-founder Gabriel Roth, who also discovered the late Sharon Jones, added him to his label's roster that his music career really took off.

Soul singer Charles Bradley has died at the age of 68.

"Mr. Bradley was truly grateful for all the love he s received from his fans and we hope his message of love is remembered and carried on", a statement said.

The singer was diagnosed with stomach cancer back in 2016 which he overcame after surgery, but later revealed how the cancer had spread to his liver. Thomas, Simpson and Casey lead by one stroke from a group of four including American Patrick Reed, whose 65 was the day's best score.

Born in 1948 in Gainesville, Fla., Bradley moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., when he was eight years old and endured a very tough childhood.

The former James Brown impersonator, nicknamed "the screaming eagle of soul" released his first album No Time For Dreaming in 2011, aged 62. "This is a whole new turning point in my life".

Bradley - who earlier this year had triumphantly returned to the stage where he thanked his fans and God - died surrounded by family, friends and bandmates at his home in Brooklyn, his publicist said. I think that he touched the right people's heart that believed in me and gave me a chance to come out. His pain was a cry for universal love and humanity. I think he wanted to hug each person on this planet individually.

Bradley, at a listening party for his 2016 record Changes, told this reporter - in a conversation often punctuated by Bradley holding up a finger, smiling and singing along to his new record - he'd helped construct the studio in which he'd later record. Bradley began working with Tom Brenneck, and would ask the band to perform while he would make up lyrics.
