Iran tested a new ballistic missile that reportedly is capable of carrying multiple warheads, CNN reported Saturday, citing the nation's state-run broadcaster announced.

This announcement was made in a climate very tense between Iran and the United States, the president, Donald Trump threatening to pull his country out of the agreement over the nuclear issue that Washington has signed in 2015 with Tehran in conjunction with the Germany, China, France, Great Britain and Russian Federation.

Iran, which fought a war with neighboring Iraq in the 1980s, sees missiles as a legitimate and vital part of its defense - particularly as regional rivals Saudi Arabia and Israel import huge amounts of military hardware from the West.

US President Donald Trump once again expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the nuclear agreement with Iran, criticizing Tehran for a missile test, and accusing them of cooperating with North Korea, TASS reported, quoted by BTA.

The Iranian test-launch constituted a direct challenge to Trump, who last month signed a bill imposing mandatory penalties on those involved in Iran's ballistic missile program and anyone who does business with them.

Though Iran has long boasted of having missiles in the same range in its arsenal, it was the first time that the Khoramshahr, with a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles) was displayed in public.

Thus far, the United Nations nuclear watchdog and the US State Department have reported that Tehran has complied with the terms of the nuclear deal.

If, as now appears increasingly likely, he decides that it is not, it could open the way for renewed USA sanctions and perhaps the collapse of the agreement. The Trump administration told Congress in July that Iran was complying with the terms of the deal, but added the country would face consequences if it violated "the spirit" of the deal.

The 2015 Iranian nuclear agreement does not address the Islamic Republic's ballistic missile program. In Syria, Iran is a close ally of President Bashar Assad.

Trump's secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, has said that the Iran nuclear agreement must be changed or the United States would not stick with it. Iran has said the accord is not up for renegotiation.

"The result is that Iran's military continues its march toward the missile technology to deliver a nuclear warhead".

Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the defense sphere.
