Vanessa revealed she underwent emergency surgery during the premature birth of her son Phoenix in December - as her water broke when she was just 29 weeks along in her pregnancy.

'She is still crying, so this is definitely going to be emotional, ' he said of Murgatroyd.

From the outside, Nick and Vanessa Lachey have the ideal little family, but the couple revealed that their journey has been a scary and emotional one.

For the show's Most Memorable Year episode this season, Vanessa chose 2017, "the year that our family was complete".

When it comes to Murgatroyd's relationship with Vanessa Lachey, it looks like it may differ a bit from her husband's.

"Vanessa and I had already had two wonderful, healthy babies".

"I'll never forget when she called me in a panic", Nick recalled. "Just make him OK, '" Vanessa explained. "I felt so helpless".

But the couple made it through the hard experience by supporting each other.

Phoenix, nearly a year old now, is healthy and at home with his brother Camden and sister Brooklyn.

Nick performed the song "Godspeed (Sweet Dreams) as Vanessa danced a rumba with partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy during the Thursday night episode".

"But we leaned on each other and got through it with great friends and family around us and in the end everything was perfectly fine, so I am thrilled to be able to tell that story tonight and I hope it inspires somebody else out there to kind of keep their head up".

"This song got us through some really tough times and helped us bond even closer as a family", Vanessa explained of the intimate performance.
