USA withdraws from UNESCO over "anti-Israel bias"

She emphasized the importance of unity when combating the rise of terrorism and conflict.

The US was angered in 2011 when UNESCO members granted Palestine full membership of the body, despite opposition from its ally Israel. The U.S. now owes about $550 million in back payments.

As part of the decision, the United States notified UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova of the intent to withdraw and become a permanent observer of the body instead. It cited USA belief in "the need for fundamental reform in the organization".

And previous year, Israel suspended cooperation with it after the agency adopted a controversial resolution which made no reference to Jewish ties to a key holy site in Jerusalem.

Praising Trump's decision as "brave and moral", Netanyahu said he has ordered Israeli diplomats to prepare for Israel's withdrawal from the organization in concert with the Americans.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson gave formal notification of the U.S. withdrawal on the grounds of "continuing anti-Israel bias" and "mounting arrears". Nearly 200 states are now members of UNESCO. Permanent Representative to the UN Nikki Haley has repeatedly denounced these actions, and said the US was "evaluating" whether or not it should continue as a member of the organization.

Citing lines in UNESCO's 1945 Constitution by US Librarian of Congress Archibald MacLeish - "since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed" ¬- she said this vision has never been more relevant, and added that the US helped inspire the 1972 UNESCO World Heritage Convention.

U.S. quits Unesco over "anti-Israel bias" Trump quits because UNESCO promotes science, education, culture. This is a loss to the United Nations family. Washington intends to participate in the fulfillment by UNESCO of a number of its functions, including the protection of the world cultural heritage, the protection of press freedom, the promotion of scientific cooperation and the educational process.

Flu Season Begins in the United States
Of the 219 flu deaths reported in the state during the 2016-17 season, more than 150 cases involved a person 65 or older. Its a quick prick to protect yourself from the flu all season long, but not all flu vaccines are the same.

Some of the United States's closest allies are among UNESCO's 195 members.

Michael Worbs, chairman of the UNESCO Executive Board, appreciated the Vietnamese' notable jump in the second round.

Leaving UNESCO might seem like typical Trump isolationism, but the U.S.'s beef with the organization goes back to previous administrations.

But according to Nikki Haley, the USA ambassador to the United Nations, the Trump administration found it to be a step too far when the agency decided this summer to designate "the Old City of Hebron and the Tomb of the Patriarchs as part of Palestinian territory".

The relationship is now set to end December 31, 2018, and the United States will remain a full member of UNESCO until then. Heather Nauert, a spokesperson for the US State Department, said, She noted that the US expressed a desire to "remain engaged" with the organisation in order to "contribute US views, perspectives and expertise".

Director-General Irina Bokova expressed disappointment at the U.S. decision.

The US was a founding member of UNESCO.
