Stay on top of breaking news stories with the ABC11 News App The North Carolina Department of Public Safety said Thursday that about 3 p.m., inmates started a fire in the prison's specialty sewing plant, where about 30 inmates work for Correction Enterprises producing embroidered logo items, safety vests, and other sewn items.

The official, who spoke to CBS affiliate WTKR said two of the nine patients were being transferred across state lines to Sentara Norfolk hospital (SNGH), in Virginia, and that the hospital would receive another five more patients. None of the inmates escaped.

Several employees of a North Carolina prison were injured during an attempted escape Thursday afternoon. A call was made to the Pasquotank County Sheriff's Office that there was a "possible escape of prisoners" at the Pasquotank Correctional Institute, WAVY-TV reported. Authorities say an inmate there set a fire in a trash can, then beat Callahan with the fire extinguisher that she had brought to douse the flames.

Members of the Prison Emergency Response Team responded to Pasquotank Correctional Institution from other state prison facilities and are assisting the local prison staff.

"Those who work in our prisons do a hard and demanding job that is critical to our safety". Seven prison employees were treated and released from Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in Elizabeth City. Sentara asked that family of the injured avoid the campus.

According to WVEC, multiple nearby schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution during the attempted escape. Buses were ordered back to their schools with any students still in transit. After school events and athletics have been cancelled.
