We can also look ahead to next year on November 11 - and all the Veterans Days that follow - to honor those who serve in our armed forces in both peacetime and in war.

World War I was often referred to as the "war to end all wars", and World War II proved how naïve that declaration was.

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.

Veteran's Day began as Armistice Day, marking the end of the fighting in World War 1 at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. The day's observation included parades and public gatherings, as well as a brief pause in business and school activities at 11 a.m.

On June 4, 1926, Congress passed a resolution that the "recurring anniversary of [November 11, 1918] should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises created to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations", and that the president should issue an annual proclamation calling for the observance of Armistice Day.

In 1975, after it became evident that the actual date of Veterans Day carried historical and patriotic significance to many Americans, President Gerald Ford signed a new law returning the observation of Veterans Day to November 11th beginning in 1978. This action supported the desires of the overwhelming majority of state legislatures, all major veterans' service organizations and the American people.

Veterans Day is a day to honor those who have served, but as we salute those who have worn the uniform, we need to ask ourselves one question: Are we truly worthy of these great men and women, especially this Veterans Day 2017?

" Vietnam War Foundation and Museum holds a Veterans Day Open House, with a living history encampment, from 9 a.m.to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.to 4 p.m. Sunday". People can celebrate Veterans Day by going to a local band or choral concert featuring patriotic music, by taking part in a flag raising ceremony, or by joining in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and singing of the National Anthem.

A visit to the Fallon County Veterans Memorial in the city park is another way to acknowledge Veterans Day.
