Tim Piazza death investigation

In a news conference Monday, Centre County District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller outlined the additional charges brought against a dozen additional Beta Theta Pi brothers in connection with the death of Beta pledge Timothy Piazza.

The new video evidence was recovered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation from security camera video which was previously deleted from the fraternity house, District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller confirmed Monday.

Centre County District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller charged 10 new defendants, reinstated charges against two people whose cases had been dropped and added counts against five who had previously been charged for actions surrounding the February 4 death of Beta Theta Pi pledge Tim Piazza.

"Guess what, guys", he said, "now we know".

Becker's attorney could not be reached for comment Monday. Newly recovered security camera footage from inside the Penn State fraternity house showed that Piazza had been given at least 18 drinks over less than 90 minutes, investigators said Monday.

In September, following an unusually long, hard-fought preliminary hearing, a judge dismissed the most serious charges against the fraternity members.

Piazza and other pledges convened in the basement, which housed a bar, for about an hour after completing what was called "the gauntlet", a series of stations inside the fraternity house where they were instructed to quickly down beer and wine.

The DA's office says the video was deleted after brothers were made aware that an investigation into Tim Piazza's death was underway and police planned to obtain the footage.

Penn State said last week it punished seven students in connection with Piazza's death who were found to be in violation of the university's student code of conduct. It was an annual tradition in the beta Theta Pi house, according to previous testimony.

The new allegations mark a significant escalation in a case that has taken several twists since the Dauphin County coroner initially ruled Piazza's death an accident.

The attorneys previously said their clients could not be held liable for what Piazza "chose" to drink in the basement.

"It's time to man up fellas", Piazza's dad, James Piazza, said Monday. The fraternity members seen serving Tim Piazza specifically, were charged with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering.

Yet the prosecutors' case has not progressed evenly since May, as the accused have said Parks Miller is overreaching with her allegations. At various points in the time between, fraternity brothers allegedly slapped Piazza several times in the face and stomach.

"When it's over is when he falls", she said of the basement party.

A lawyer for Joseph Ems, who had previously faced a reckless-endangerment charge that was dismissed by the district judge, said he plans to seek dismissal of the three fresh charges against his client: hazing, furnishing alcohol to a minor and an alcohol violation. Charges against Becker are limited to the tampering, obstructing and hindering counts. In addition, five of the 14 students previously charged are facing more counts.

Reggie Goeke, who was charged with one count of hazing, furnishing and unlawful acts.
