Theresa May's statement on Robert Mugabe's resignation

"The DA has today written to President Jacob Zuma and relevant ministers to put them on terms to not entertain granting President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, or his wife, Grace Mugabe, political asylum in South Africa".

Mugabe, 93, who had been at the helm of the southern African country since independence from Britain in 1980, stepped down earlier this week, succumbing to pressure from within his own ruling party, the military, as well as angry citizens grappling with high unemployment, chronic cash shortages and crumbling infrastructure.

He said Mugabe's record during Zimbabwe's liberation war and his dictatorial 37-year presidency meant he would not qualify for refugee status.

Lawmakers roared in jubilation and people have begun celebrating in the streets. British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Tuesday that Mugabe's resignation gave Zimbabwe the chance to forge a new path, free from oppression.

Mugabe's successor, former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, will be inaugurated on Friday.

It was in 1977, Wendy Miller says, when Moore first approached her at the Gadsden Mall, where she was working as a Santa's helper. But, she says, she did confide in close friends immediately after the incident and told family members later as an adult.

ZANU-PF recalled Mugabe as party president on Sunday.

Zimbabwe prepares to swear in new leader, but where is Mugabe?

Johnson says he hopes Mugabe's resignation will be a turning point and that there should now be "free and fair democratic elections and above all not a transition from one despotic rule to another".

With Mr Mnangagwa - a former ally of Mr Mugabe nicknamed the Crocodile - the likely next leader, Mr Johnson said: "I think it's very important at the moment that we don't focus too much on the personalities, let's concentrate on the potential, the hope for Zimbabwe - an incredible country, a attractive country blessed with extraordinary physical and human potential".

"With the resignation of Robert Mugabe, today marks an historic moment for Zimbabwe".
